This accident is easily reminiscent of the container ship DALI, which also lost power briefly during navigation two weeks ago. In the early morning of March 26th local time, the DALI crashed into the largest bridge in Baltimore, Maryland, USA, the Francis Scott Key Bridge while navigating. It is understood that at the time of the accident, the APL Qingdao was leaving New York Harbor and planning to go to the next port, Norfolk Harbor.

A Coast Guard spokesperson said, "At around 8:30pm on Friday, May 5th, the New York Coast Guard's Vessel Traffic Management System received a notification from the APL Qingdao, saying that the ship had lost power while crossing the Kill Van Kull waterway in the Van Vorst channel. "The ship later regained power and was safely anchored near the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge with the assistance of three tugboats. It is reported that the channel is located between Staten Island in New York City and Bayonne in New Jersey, connecting Newark Bay in the west and New York Harbor in the east. The APL Qingdao was built in 2012 with a capacity of 10,106 TEU and is flying the flag of Malta. Currently, it is operated by the shipping company CMA CGM and deployed on the India America Express route.
